Googles Matt Cutts has recently moved to clarify the role of the "keywords" meta tag often used by webmasters to influence their search engine rankings and whether this now plays any role in its website ranking algorithm.

Webmasters often use 3 main "tags" when designing any website, these being: title, description and keywords.

Although the exact programming of Googles search algorithm remains a tightly guarded secret, webmasters have long been of the belief that these, if used wisely, can be used to influence the positioning of a website within Googles search rankings.

While Cutts acknowledges the relevance of the title and description tag, his view on the keywords tag is now clear - namely that Googles search algorithm no longer even reads this tag. Cutts explanation reflects a major shift in how many of today's top search engines decide where to rank a website for given keywords. Cutts explains that around 10 years ago many search engines judged web pages solely on their content and placed little regard to so called "off page" factors, such as the number (and quality) of links pointing to a website.

Some time ago, Google decided that website developers where "stuffing" the keywords tags with words related to their products and services in an attempt to influence the search engines. Therefore, it became increasingly difficult for the search engine algorithms to understand whether the website in question was truly relevant to these keywords.

This, combined with the increasing popularity of social networking has meant that Google now places more emphasis on external factors when ranking your site, namely the quantity and quality of links pointing to your website and where these come from.
